The History and Heritage of Hydro Tasmania 29/04/2005 Initiated in 2003, the Program began as a pilot project aimed at developing an inventory of the heritage values of assets in the Derwent catchment area. The inventory revealed that many of the assets could not be viewed in isolation, and that when viewed together, the assets presented a unique picture. Following the success of the pilot project, the Program is now focusing on further asset inventories; conservation plans; the development of procedural guidelines for the maintenance, upgrade and management of assets; and an oral history project. Alongside the Derwent catchment inventory project, asset inventories for Shannon, Great Lake, Trevallyn and Mersey - Forth regions have been completed. From this information, several high values sites will have conservation management plans completed within the next year. These sites are: Tungatinah, Lake Margaret, Tarraleah and Waddamana. The highest priority for conservation planning is the Tungatinah Power Station. Built in the 1950s, the station will be undergoing essential upgrades partly in response to the introduction of the national electricity market. Of all the sites, Tarraleah is considered an 'Icon Scheme'. This architecturally significant station was built in the 1930s and includes terrazzo flooring and cutting edge technology. The site is also socially significant as people lived close by in camps and the village during the construction of the station and continued to live there to maintain and run the stations and transmission lines in the area. In terms of both technological and social significance, the Oral History Project is playing an import role in helping to determine levels of significance. The project is unearthing a wealth of useful technological information and interesting social anecdotes. A book will be published by the end of next year. Hydro Tasmania is one of the state's most significant economic drivers. That the corporation is committed to understanding and maintaining its cultural heritage assets as part of its operations is commendable. |
