Bridport heritage walk a step in the right direction

21/10/2009

Bridport's foreshore walking track has been given a new lease on life with heritage signs and solar lighting.

Opening the heritage walk recently, the Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage, Michelle O'Byrne, said the initiative demonstrated the heart behind the Bridport community.

"Bridport has much to be proud of, and this latest project is another feather in the community's cap," Ms O'Byrne said.

"By repairing the existing walking track and adding heritage interpretation signs and solar lighting, the community has immediately created a wonderful new asset for locals and visitors.

"The Bridport foreshore is one of the most pleasant areas in Tasmania and includes one of Tasmania's most often photographed scenes - the old pier.

"Understanding our past is crucial to creating a sense of place and valuing the lives and work of those who helped shaped this wonderful community. The signs will create another important element in promoting Bridport as a tourist destination."

The heritage walk and solar lighting was supported with a Federal Government grant of $150,000.

"The simple initiative of including 20 solar lights along the track demonstrates that the Bridport community is forward thinking, capturing free energy and using the latest technology to the best advantage," Ms O'Byrne said.

"It's a wonderful project that provides so many opportunities to both the community and visitors and adds to their appreciation of the environment."
