The next step in a joint project to protect the historic heritage assets of Tasmania's Southern Midlands is under way.

Assessment of the heritage values of properties will begin at Oatlands and follows the recommendations of a report prepared for the Southern Midlands Council.

The Minister for Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts, Michelle O'Byrne, said the State Government provided $40,000 to assist the Southern Midlands Council engage a consultant for the project.

"This project identifies historic heritage places and how they play a part in the municipality's profile and future economic growth," Ms O'Byrne said.

Mayor of the Southern Midlands Council, Tony Bisdee, said that Council will ensure the community and property owners have an opportunity to participate in the process.

"We held public forums when this process started and we will continue to consult with the community, Mayor Bisdee said.

"This project will commence with the Oatlands Historic Precinct Special Area and we're holding a community forum in July at Oatlands to allow the community to input into the process. Assessments of the remaining places will be undertaken in late 2008."

Chairperson of the Heritage Council, Michael Lynch, said the joint project will increase the heritage status of the Southern Midlands.

"Tasmania's historic heritage is important to local communities, Tasmania's economy and the environment. It also contributes greatly to our sense of identity, place and community," Mr Lynch said.

"The Southern Midlands is known for its historic heritage and this process will serve to strengthen its identity.Heritage Tasmania and Southern Midlands Council will have staff in Oatlands undertaking the assessments.

"I look forward to the assessments being completed and recommendations for state heritage listings from Heritage Tasmania being made to the Heritage Council for a decision over the coming months." Mr Lynch said.
