Macquarie Street

When Governor Macquarie visited Hobart Town in 1811 he was alarmed by the lack of planning and instructed Surveyor General James Meehan to layout a regular town plan. Following consultation with settlers and officials, Macquarie Street was established as Meehan's baseline, from which other streets were laid out in a grid pattern.

With this new order, Hobart Town slowly grew with Macquarie Street considered to be the main street. Eventually shops and businesses concentrated on Elizabeth and Liverpool Streets, but Macquarie Street became known for its fine collection of buildings.
