Before settlement

It can be difficult to picture how Sullivans Cove and the Hobart area looked before David Collins established the second permanent European colony here in 1804.

The Derwent River was home to the Mouheneenner and Nuenonne bands, amongst others, of the South East and Big River people. Aboriginal people have lived in the Derwent Valley for a minimum of 12,000 years and in Tasmania for at least 35,000 years.

The location of the Hobart Rivulet was also a major factor in Collins choosing Sullivans Cove to establish his camp. Over two hundred years the city has grown and developed and the layers of history and stories from the past are still with us today.
