The Tasmanian Heritage Council and Heritage Tasmania are key elements of the Resource Management and Planning System (RMPS) provisions for the historic environment and fulfil key statutory responsibilities under the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995. In recent years, Heritage Tasmania has increasingly taken a role in broader strategic and educational developments in the sector on behalf of Government.
The historic heritage sector is a relatively diverse collection of individuals, groups, organisations, bodies, tradespeople, building and design professionals and the three levels of government. It includes heritage owners, managers and developers; heritage tourism operators, local historical societies, history rooms and museums; heritage practitioners, the National Trust in Tasmania and the Heritage Council.
